ResurFx is a non-ablative laser made by the well know laser company Lumenis. Non-ablative means that it does not remove or ablate skin. The way it can achieve is through the process of fractioning the laser. The laser beams skip some of the skin spots on every application or ‘zap’.
The untouched skin allows speedy recovery of the skin that gets the laser zaps. This leads to no flaking, no scabbing or crusting. The skin turns reddish pink after a treatment, almost appearing as a mild sunburn. By next day the redness is reduced to pink and can easily be covered. This allows the downtime from ResurFx to be reduced to only one evening. Other lasers such as CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) or Erbium can have one to two weeks of recovery. Even with fractioning of CO2 as done in Fraxel there usually is a few days of down time.
ResurFx is a very quick laser as it takes only one pass, meaning you do not have to go over the same area of skin several times which is the case with many lasers. Patients are prepared in advance to apply Emla (a numbing cream) and it reduces any discomfort. The whole face treatment takes about 15 minutes.
The results are usually apparent in 4 to 6 weeks. That is the usual time period before doing a second session of ResurFx. To achieve optimal results, 3 sessions are suggested, each one month apart. The laser energy stimulates collagen growth which then tightens the skin, reduces the fine lines, reduces the size of skin pores and the final result can be described as a tighter, brighter and smoother skin.
It is good for all skin colors. It is very effective in treating acne scars or scars of any kind.
One of the nice features is the ability to shape the laser beam in many different ways such as square, hexagon, rectangle or just a line. This enables application of this laser to any area of the face,neck or body. This allows specific treatments such as the vertical lip lines.
Caution: Like all lasers there are risks involved with ResurFx as well. The treatment should not be taken lightly. We have strict protocols of checklists and instructions for patients to pre-qualify them for these treatments. You should always make sure that you go to a well trained laser operator and preferably a doctor.
