Neck Tightening (Platysmaplasty)
The neck can become loose with age. It is a combination of excess skin, lack of elasticity and separation of the muscle Platysma in the midline.
The Platysma muscle is a broad band of muscle covering the whole neck on each side. In youth the two muscles meet in the midline and interdigitate leading to a smooth corset like appearance.
With age the two muscles pull apart and the free edge of each muscle ends up forming a prominent band. This appearance can only be improved by stitching the two muscles back together in a procedure called Platysmaplasty.
The incision is made under the chin in a natural crease. The free edge of the muscles is identified and then brought together with stitching. This procedure can be done alone or in combination with a facelift or necklift.
