Chin Implant Specialist
A small chin can affect the facial profile and harmony of the face. It can be specially pronounced on the side view in a photograph. It can also make a normal nose appear big and exaggerate any excess skin or fat under the chin. With age bone loss makes the chin even smaller and it slowly starts to telescope into the face. A chin implant can restore the profile and the jaw line. It is a quick procedure and can be done under local anesthesia without putting a patient to sleep.
The chin implant is usually made out of either solid silicone or medical grade Gortex. I prefer the solid silicone. Both materials have a long track record of safety.
For placing the implant a small 2cm incision can be made either under the chin or inside the lower lip. I prefer the incision under the chin. This reduces any chance of contamination of the implant by saliva or bacteria that live in the mouth.
Recovery is usually fast. The first few days there can be significant swelling. Sometimes a short course of oral steroid pills can help reduce the swelling. Stitches come out in 5-7 days. At this time the swelling and bruising are not very noticeable with cover up and most patients can return to work and regular activities.
My approach: I prefer to use Silicone implants made by ‘Implantech’. I always use a sub mental (under the chin) incision.
