Juvederm

Juvederm is a soft, clear gel-like material made from hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring sugar found in our bodies.

Juvederm is made by Allergan, the same company that makes Botox. It is a quick treatment well suited for lips and smile lines. The treatment takes about 10 minutes and the effects can last from six months to a year. No skin testing is needed.

It also comes premixed with lidocaine and helps reduce any discomfort from the injection material. This type is called Juvederm XC.

Restylane

Restylane is a dermal (deep layer of skin) filling substance made of hyaluronic acid, produced biosynthetically by bacterial fermentation. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found throughout your body.

It gives volume to the skin, lubricates the joints, and gives the eyes their shape. Because it is hydrophilic, it absorbs water and increases in volume after being injected into the face. No skin test is required.

Injection can be uncomfortable, so we recommend nerve blocks and topical anesthesia. Some redness and swelling can last for 3 to 5 days, but usually can be easily camouflaged with make-up. Restylane lasts for about six months. It also comes premixed with lidocaine and helps reduce any discomfort from the injection material. This type is called Restylane-L

Belotero

Belotero is a hyaluronic acid gel in the same family as Restylane and Juvederm. It is very similar to those gels with one exception.

Its molecular structure gives it a unique ability to be injected superficially in the skin without giving a blue discoloration to the skin called ‘Tyndall Effect’ or ‘Tyndall Sign’.

This is usually seen with Restylane or Juvederm if it is injected in superficial skin. Belotero is manufactured by Merz Pharmaceuticals.

Belotero FAQs

Q. I have never heard of Belotero?
A. Belotero Balance has been used in the U.S. for over a decade as a hyaluronic acid filler designed for more superficial placement.

Q. Does it last longer than Restylane and Juvederm?
A. No, it should last about the same time 6 to 9 months.

Q. Does it have the numbing medication lidocaine in it like Juvederm XC and Restylane L?
A. Belotero Balance (+) includes lidocaine to help reduce discomfort during injection. Ask during your consultation which formulation is right for you.
